Safe Pedicures?

I recently saw an article on +Wonderwall with pictures of celebrities feet with beautiful pedicures.   Pedicures are quite popular these days.
As a podiatrist, I am frequently asked if pedicures are safe.   Well, they sure are enjoyable.   However, pedicures are also a good way to pick up fungal infections.   I know most reputable salons clean their metal instruments between customers.   There are a lot of nail tools, however, that are not cleaned:  the pumices, the nail brushes, and nail files.    Additionally, the whirlpools can not be "sterilized".   They can be disinfected, and hopefully your salon is doing this.
So, what is a girl to do?  My advice?  Pick a salon that you can trust to disinfect the whirlpools, and take your own pedicure instruments.   Purchasing everything from the nail files to the cuticle nippers is really not that expensive.   And if it will save you a fungal infection in your toenails, it will be well worth it!
By taking your own instruments, you can really relax and enjoy the pedicure, knowing that you are safe from picking up an infection!
